Nationals Update

IOW Bowls goes from strength to strength.

Last weekend the Under 25’s took on Egham from Surrey in the Double Rink.

In Jack Young’s absence the Home team was managed by Keith Beckett and after a thrilling game the home rink, made up of Lucas & Ryan Trigg, Robbie Hayes & Travis Mellor, had a hard fought win 20-17 v John Wards team.

Ian Wallace took the away team to Egham, the team was made up by Tansy & Peter Wheeler and Josh & Jack Berry who stole the honours with a late surge to win 28-18, so IOW won overall 48-35.

They then went on to the Southern Area Final v Swale from Kent but after a valiant effort lost 31-43.

Well done the Sharks and thanks to all the supporters for turning up to cheer the youngsters on!

Onto the Men’s Nationals,

Singles - Darren Griffith had a home draw and won comfortably 21-2 & Paul Dickinson also a home draw,  won 21-17.  Unfortunately they met each other in the next round which Darren won  21-10.  Darren is now through to the National Finals to be played at Nottingham at the end of March.

Pairs – Darren Griffith & Travis Mellor were given a walk over by their opponents whilst Keith Beckett & Robbie Hayes travelled away to Victory and won convincingly 30-15 against Adrian Ash & Dorian Bishop.  The next round saw Darren & Travis win 24-14 but Keith & Robbie lost 3-21.  Darren & Travis then went on to lose 17-21 to the pair that put Keith & Robbie out of the competition.

Triples – Darren, Paul & Travis had another comfortable home win against a Victory triple 15-5 whilst Keith, Robbie & Jack travelled away to Palmerston and won comfortably 18-8.  Darren's team went on to win the next round 17-5 but then lost the following round 18-19.  Keith's team won the next 2 rounds 14-13 and 13-12 but then lost to the triples that beat Darren & co 11-14.

Fours – Darren’s IOW Team of Robbie, Paul & Travis were drawn against Keith’s IOW Team of Ryan, Josh & Bertie Everson and after a close fought and entertaining game Darren’s team came out on top 21-15.  The next round was against an old adversary from Victory where Darren's team were defeated 11-31.

Well done everyone and good luck to Darren in Nottingham.

Ladies Nationals

With the Men’s Team already going out to Worthing in the Denny Plate, the Ladies tried to go one better than the men in the Yetton Plate but narrowly lost their game also against Worthing by 5 shots! Well done to Gay and all the Ladies.

And Finally the Mixed Pairs

Paul Dickinson & Gay Allen had a home Draw against a good Worthing Team but cruised to an early lead and eventually took an easy 29-2 win to reach the Area Final on a neutral green in January against another Worthing Pair.  The Area Final was played at Victory.  It was a close game with our pair trailing 3 shots going into the final end but scored 5 shots to give them a 2 shot win.  They then went on to the National Finals which took place in February at Northampton.  They got a walk-over in the first round and went on to play Chawton Park in the evening where unfortunately they lost 23 -14.  Chawton Park went on to the next round (semi-final) to play against York, which they lost 12 -24.  York went on to win the final against Bristol 17 - 16.

Well done to you both.
